and Information

By SunTouch® A division of Watts Water Technologies, Inc.

WarmWire can be easily sized for any project.

Overview

– Evaluate how many square feet of floor warming you wish to do.
Do not put under cabinets or appliances.
Leave the wire at least 4" away from the toilet wax ring and 2"–3" away from your walls.
Do install up to the toe-kick in front of kitchen or bath cabinets so your toes stay warm.

Click on our Flooring Calculator to calculate not just how many floor heating you need, you can also see how much it will cost you daily or yearly, and adjust your uses base on your heating budget.

– Pick a “spacing factor” (2", 2.5", or 3" on center). Below are guidelines for application and respective spacing recommendations.

***The 2.5" spacing is most commonly used.

Follow these simple steps in calculating heated area and wire length(s):

1. Calculate the total wall-to-wall area of the room, then subtract built-ins like vanity, tub, toilet, refrigerator, etc. Don’t quote the area behind toilet and stay about 3"–4" from the wax ring.
_____________ total area
– _____________ built-ins
= _____________ sq.ft

2. a) For rooms with built-ins, such as kitchens and baths, multiply the above area by 0.90. This is the heated area.
________ x 0.90 = ________ sq.ft.

b) Or for open areas, such as family rooms and sunrooms, take out 6"–12" around the perimeter of the room and calculate the remaining area. This is the heated area.

3. Decide if you need 120 VAC or 240 VAC WarmWire. In general, use 120 VAC for heated areas 150 sq.ft. or less and 240 VAC for areas larger than 150 sq.ft. (It’s okay if you don’t know at this time, because 120 VAC WarmWire is basically the same
cost as 240 VAC.) ___ 120 VAC ___ 240 VAC

4. Decide on 2", 2.5", or 3" o.c. wire spacing (see above guidelines).

5. Look at the WarmWire tables to match the heated area with the desired wire spacing and proper voltage.
Round down to the nearest size; its always best to have too little, than too much.
You can always adjust the spacing in the field to make up the difference.

Remember, you can use multiple cables if your area is larger than the available spool lengths. You can also use multiple cables for smaller areas. For instance, if you are using 2.5" spacing, and need to heat 60 sq.ft., select one 25-sq.ft. cable and one 35-sq.ft. cable.

Controls and Accessories

The newly-redesigned FloorStat controls are now even more elegant. Loaded with more features, they are easier than ever to install and program due to the new two-part “control face” and “power base” design.
Both FloorStats are sold with power bases as a single item; however, control faces and power bases can be ordered separately, if desired.

Having the thermostat in two parts makes it easier to wire line voltage, the floor sensor and our new remote thermostat control. The control face is easily removed from the power base allowing upgrade from non-programmable to programmable or vice versa. Because a built-in capacitor holds about 2 hours of power, you can also remove the face, program it at the kitchen table, and then reattach it to the power base.

The Programmable FloorStat is both elegant and intelligent. Available for both 120 VAC and 240 VAC, it accepts programming for three set-points: Comfort, Economy (set-back), and Vacation. Features include:
(1) A floor sensor that directly senses floor temperature
(2) A 16-amp capacity controlling up to 150 sq.ft. of 120-VAC, or 260 sq.ft. of 240-VAC WarmWire spaced at 2.5" o.c.
(3) Built-in ground fault protection with no need for a separate GFCI (in most code areas)
(4) Large digital display
(5) Temperature range of 40° to 104°F
(6) Temperature display in °F or °C
(7) On/Off switch
(8) Connection for new Remote FloorStat Control

The non-programmable FloorStat is very simple to operate. Just push the on/off button and turn the dial to set the floor temperature. It has several other features:
(1) A floor sensor that directly senses floor temperature
(2) Built-in ground fault protection with no need for a separate GFCI (in most code areas)
(3) Temperature range of 59° to 95°F
(4) 16-amp capacity to control up to 150 sq.ft. of 120-VAC WarmWire spaced at 2.5" o.c.
(5) Connection for new Remote FloorStat Control
Note: Available only in 120 VAC model.

Control face units can be ordered separately as non-programmable (500550) or programmable (500650). Replacement
control face units are compatible with either 120-VAC or 240-VAC power base units.
Replacement power bases can be ordered separately. Order either the 120-VAC base (PB112-120GA) or the
240-VAC base (PB112-240GA).

WarmWire design and sizing considerations

WarmWire can be used to warm the floor in areas as small as a powder room or as large as an entire home.
There really is no limit. A single cable can heat areas as large as 240 sq.ft. Even larger rooms can be warmed with
multiple cables wired in parallel.
WarmWire can provide all the heat necessary for a room, as well as just warm the floor. It delivers over 40 BTUH per square foot, which is quite a bit of heat. Most rooms need far less than this. So, if you have a room where you want WarmWire to be the sole source of heat, it will likely do the job.
Simply calculate the room’s heat loss and compare it to the output of WarmWire shown on the next page.
